Nomadic
Retirement, Part 3: Paraguay, Uruguay, and Brazil By Jamie Douglas.
Brazil!
This wildly diverse country has become much more visible on the world stage
in the last few years. There really is so much more to this, the fifth
largest country in the world by geographic size as well as by population
than lively São Paulo or Rio de Janeiro’s Carnival and its mini-bikini
saturated beaches. This country has been on a huge economic upswing, which
started when Lula da Silva was elected president almost nine years ago.
After his election, this unrepentant socialist scared the USA into curtailing
trade with his nation, forcing the Brazilians to accept China’s overtures
in trade, in turn growing the economy to such a degree that US President
Obama had to visit Brazil after Lula left office to proclaim to the new
Presidenta Dilma Rousseff that “the US wants to be one of your best customers!”
My, how times have changed! The world has even invented a new acronym for
these types of large emerging market nations, BRIC, standing for Brazil,
Russia, India and China. (Sounds a little better that the one used for
the de-emerging nations in Europe, the PIIGS, Portugal, Ireland, Italy,
Greece, and Spain.) Traveling in the mighty nation of Brazil is challenging.
Remember that it is the only country in the Americas where Portuguese is
spoken exclusively, and do not expect anyone to speak English to you. To
enter Brazil, you need that pesky visa, obtainable only at a genuine Brazilian
diplomatic office rather than at the port of entry, which will set you
back $140 per person. Inquire at the same time whether your recent travels
will require you to obtain a yellow fever vaccination or not. Unless arriving
via a long bus ride from a neighboring country, you will most likely arrive
in São Paulo or Rio de Janeiro, both worthy destinations for the
curious nomad, offering an immensity of diversity and cultural events year
round. Because Brazil fought hard to land the Fútbol World Cup for
2014 as well as the 2016 Olympic Games, the nation has committed a total
of one trillion dollars to the improvement of its infrastructure. Only
time will tell if this is a wise investment in its future, but you as the
traveler stands to benefit from these improvements, regardless. - Nomadic

Do
you want to Become an Expat Retiree for the Right Reasons?
You have a sense of
adventure, not just for seeking out a
new home, but also for eating strange culinary offerings in restaurants,
market stands, and occasionally on the street. Many of the items you find
on a menu will be unfamiliar to you, leaving you somewhat at the mercy
of fate when you order a meal.
You have an open mind
when entering your new surroundings. Remember that the way it is done in
your former home country may be different; sometimes better, sometimes
worse, but rarely the same. I am talking about your basics here: plumbing,
electricity, telephones, internet and transportation infrastructure just
to touch on a few of the issues that will affect you the most.
You are self-sufficient,
and not completely dependent on having a maid, gardener, and driver. Depending
on your living circumstances, you may need to think about how this might
set you apart in your community right from the get-go, exposing you and
possibly making you a target for crime. While it is usually Ok to have
a maid or gardener come by a few times a week, I do not recommend providing
full time live-in employment to several of the less fortunate neighbors
and paying them twice the going rate to gain their loyalty. - Do

How
to Guarantee Your Retirement by Protecting your Retirement Assets in Panama
- They say humans are distinctly different from other species by their
ability to think and plan ahead, yet the majority of us seem to imitate
our animal cousins when it comes to planning our retirements. We
choose to depend on our broke governments to provide for our later years
through our Social Security Ponzi schemes, or through our upside down retirement
pension funds, our mutual funds that overcharge us on management fees yet
rarely reach their benchmarks, and our managed stock portfolios that our
broker uses to churn and burn for his commissions each month while we lose
money. But for those of us who think ahead, and think “outside of the box”,
retirement planning can be guaranteed by using simple mathematics and some
common sense. The earlier you realize this simple formula, the more
leverage you will have in the form of compound returns over time. How

Three
Key Elements to Securing Your Overseas Retirement
- If you do a search on ‘cheapest places to retire abroad’ you’ll find
countries as diverse as Panama, France and Argentina listed. However,
one man’s affordable country is another man’s luxurious and unaffordable
dream. So bear in mind, cheap is relative to how wealthy you are!
When searching for a place to call home in retirement affordability is
a very critical factor. Additional critical factors are elements
such as the climate (too hot can be unbearable, too cold can cost more
in terms of heating bills). Security and crime levels are important;
considering local economic stability is also vital. You will also need
to look at the healthcare standards locally, and what treatment costs.
Accessibility is a factor for those who want to be able to maintain contact
with family and friends. What about the language barrier? And
are there cultural or even religious obstacles to your comfortable integration?

If
it’s the Hollywood A-list lifestyle you’re lusting after, then look no
further than waterfront property on Lake Como in Lombardy, Italy.
Palatial mansions grace the shorelines of this glacier lake, while aristocratic
castles cut into the steep country hills that descend into Europe’s third
largest lake. For centuries, movie stars, European aristocracy and
Swiss financiers alike have carved out hidden paradises in Lake Como, making
this lake one of the most popular tourist destinations in all of Italy;
recent archeological finds have even determined that Roman nobles often
visited Lake Como. As you drive along the shoreline of Lake Como
(which boasts an impressive area size of 146 km²), you could end up
passing by George Clooney, or waving hello to Sylvester Stallone or billionaire
entrepreneur Richard Branson. - Lake

How
to Retire Abroad – 7 Key Considerations - How
much research have you done into your new nation and its people in a bid
to understand them? You will not be in a position to change the majority,
so you need to ensure you can fit in with the majority when you emigrate.
In order to do so it may be a requirement for you to learn a new language,
observe new codes of conduct, laws, morals or just national holidays and
traditions. Others who retire abroad are determined that integration will
not be a requirement as they will remain in an expat enclave – yet there
is great risk associated with having such an attitude. Whilst it
may require less effort to live amongst one’s own, it limits your opportunities
for enjoying your new life abroad and your new nation at best. At
worst it could mean you run the risk of isolation which could result in
you finding life very difficult if ever you do have to step outside your
small community for medical, legal or just social assistance for example.
Another consideration to bear in mind is that medical facilities may not
be superior or even adequate in your new nation, medical professionals
may not speak English, and if you become long-term sick you may find it
wholly unaffordable to remain living abroad. - How

Living
& Retiring In Marseille - The Hippest Spot
- Marseille Je t’aime! - I’m on the terrace of an 18th century apartment
building hanging my washing on the line. The November sun feels good on
my skin. A bouquet of basil, thyme and sage, emanates from the tiny herb
garden I’ve managed to cultivate. A giant seagull or mouette, whooshes
past me and beckons me to take a break. As I watch my friend glide through
the air, the magnificent creature transforms into my private tour guide,
reaffirming all the reasons I decided to follow my heart and call this
place home. I take in my new surroundings. Limestone hills and orange terracotta
rooftops scattered across a Mediterranean bay. I’m captivated by the rich
history and energized by the vibe. As I inhale the salty sea air,
my soul dances to the beat of North African drums radiating from the distance.
The aroma of Spanish paella, kebab, and spicy merguez rises from the bustling
market stalls across the street. Fresh local produce, Tunisian leather
goods, hand-made lavender soap, it’s all on offer and it’s all within arms
reach. I see women wrapped in traditional African cloth, women donning
the burqa, and women dressed in high heels and mini-skirts. The world has
merged into one. The mix is exotic, eclectic and uniquely Marseille. .

You
Can Retire In Mexico – A Safe Haven! - Getting
back to my adventure, I spent the next 12 ½ years learning all I
could about the social, economic, legal, political, financial, geographical
and cultural aspects of my new surroundings. Of course, since I was not
financially wealthy, I was forced to work as well. When I arrived in Mexico,
I understood that next to oil and gas, tourism was the next biggest part
of the Mexican economy. So, tourism it was. Quickly deducing that since
I did not own land and I was not a millionaire to invest in development,
real estate was the next best way to earn money. The only problem was I
had no real estate experience. Not to be thwarted by the obvious, I learned
that at that time there were no laws or rules governing real estate agent
qualifications. (Let it be noted that this has changed and is regulated
but we will discuss this further later on). Thus I got the best training
possible, on-the-job training. After 12½ years of learning as much
about what not to do as what must be done, I have a level of understanding
of in and outs of living, working, investing, developing and coping with
Mexico. While I will tell you this was the best decision I ever made, I
will be quick to tell you it is not for everybody. The key is to give it
an honest chance by being smart and using the experience of experts (and
I am convinced I am one of them). Look at it this way, it may take you
a time to read this (and believe it or not you will learn from it), but
what is a little time in the scheme of things pertaining to the rest of
your life to find out if you have what it takes to be as courageous as
our forefathers and strike out to find your “Life, Liberty and the Pursuit
of Paradise (Happiness)!” - You

Retiring
in Canada By Jamie Douglas - Americans wanting
to leave their troubled nation behind, but wishing to continue to enjoy
the same high standard of living, or perhaps even better than what they
are used to, should look no further that their northern neighbor, Canada.
The second largest country in the world, behind Russia, which is almost
double Canada’s size, it shares the world’s largest land border with the
USA, much of it along the 49th parallel. It is home to around 35 million
people, with a population density of 8.3 per sq mi, about 10 times less
than the US. Except for Quebec where French is spoken, it is English speaking,
but with both languages being official. Canada is not just huge, it is
awesome. Its size has very little to do with its attractiveness. The scenic
beauty is amazing. From the Atlantic Maritime provinces and Newfoundland
all the way to Vancouver Island in British Columbia, stretching 3250 miles
across the North American continent, you will encounter everything from
thousands of lakes full of fish, huge forest tracts, expansive fields of
wheat and corn, thoroughly modern cities, and many a friendly small town.-

- In the first installment of this series on circling the globe in the
southern hemisphere, we visited New Zealand and then headed east to South
America, where we will encounter cultural treasures, vastly opposing landscapes,
and diverse people. From the frozen southern Tierra del Fuego to the steamy
swamps of the Darien Gap, from the beaches of Brazil to the heights of
Mt. Aconcagua, this fascinating region of the world has a lot in store

Nomadic Retirement: Chapter One - When it comes to
retirement, the term conjures up a carefully crafted image that is apparent
in any 55+ adult community advertising brochure, which show you how to
spend your golden years riding around in a golf cart within the confines
of your gated community, hanging out with your equally bronzed contemporaries
by the pool, and having your nightly cocktail in the clubhouse. -

What
is the square area of Paradise? In so many of the world beauty spots there
is an annoying city or freeway that degrades the view. There
are a few still pristine places, but the crush of people is so heavy, you
are always surrounded. There is noise. There is car exhaust. There is...
Patagonia to escape to. San Carlos de Bariloche is perched above the lovely
Nahuel Huapi Lake with brazos (arms) stretching off as far as the imagination
can wander. El Bolson a couple of hours south does not have the downtown
lake but just turn to the west and the massive wall of rock rises thousands
of feet above you. Mountains completely encircle the town but the wall
draws your eye and you feel like an ant. Most people just gasp as
the clouds pull back and you see the true height of the peaks. A few minutes
drive south and across the Rio Negro Province border, and into Chubut Province,
there is Lago Puelo spread before an array of snowy peaks. From Lago Puelo
north to Bariloche, then on to Villa la Angostura and finally to San Martin
de Los Andes: my Paradise. When the crowds come, the exits are everywhere.
There is the Lake or you can travel deeper in as pavement turns to gravel,
then to dirt, and buildings begin to disappear among the trees. The Lake
country of Argentina is dominated by a mix of truly awesome mountains,
and intensely beautiful lakes. Sprinkle in a few graceful volcanos and
you have a wild masterpiece outside your windows. No matter which side
of which lake you find yourself on, the colors will surprise you. The sky
is childhood-blue and the water is so clear you can easily pick out stones
on the bottom even from the top of the surrounding ridges. - Living
