Wine
Investing in Argentina By Tim Leffel - With all
the risks and the time factor, can it be a good investment, from purely
a financial perspective? The basic laws of economics are still favoring
Argentina and will for a while. A vineyard in Napa Valley costs 10 or 15
times what a comparable one does in Argentina, yet the best Argentine wines
are starting to command respectable prices. “Vineyard prices will never
be what they are in California or Italy,” English says, “but they are certainly
moving up toward a middle ground.” The value of some prime land has doubled
in value in 12 months. That can’t last, but many think that 30% a year
is probably realistic for quite a few years to come—if the buyer’s price
was not inflated to start with. Many think that Argentina’s best
years are still ahead of it. The overall quality is still improving, the
word is still getting out, and a lot of production is still tied up in
making cheap jug wine and concentrate. Argentina exported less than 1 percent
of its harvest in 1992. In 2005 the percentage was up to 16 percent—still
a low number by international standards. So all those Argentine wines on
store shelves and in restaurants abroad still represent a very small portion
of what’s possible. - Wine

Phillip
and Christine both work for Jean-Jean, Frances second largest winery, and
therefore they are anchored both domestically and professionally to France’s
deep cultural roots. While the company is large,
the precision and pace of Jean-Jean remains undeniably French, and further
explains the country’s position as one of the world’s most prominent producers
of wine, but certainly not the most prolific. This has been of little importance
to them for some time, because they’ve always felt that the mass production
of any precious commodity decreases value, both real and perceived. Honorable
as this sentiment may be, globalization has allowed producers from up and
coming wine hot spots such as Australia, New Zealand, and South American
to challenge France in the consumer market. By not effectively focusing
on the trends of an increasingly wired world to educate people about their
products and culture, access, cost and an information gap have hurt them
dearly. It’s foreign to few, even inside France, that communication has
never been their strong point. People don’t like to order what they can’t
pronounce and don’t like to buy what they don’t understand; the French
have done little to abate this phenomena. Their refusal to make their product
accessible, such as exporting their bottles with English translations,
has hurt them dearly. - Living

Set
in San Rafael in the south of the vast wine growing area of Mendoza province,
some 1000 km west of Buenos Aires, Roca Wines is one of approximately 1700
wineries producing an eclectic range of fine red, white and rose wines.
Its four vineyards, totalling 114 hectares, like the other 16,000 or so
vineyards in the province, are fed by snowmelt from the awesome Andean
mountain range, which makes its way through the foothills via the Atuel
and Diamante rivers and into a complicated and staggeringly efficient network
of irrigation canals. Originally put in place by the indigenous Indians
centuries ago, the maze of ditches means the provision of water, becomes
a matter of control, rather than luck, or the will of the gods! Low
rainfall, intense sun, rich soil, and mild night time temperatures are
all factors that allow a slow ripening of the grapes so creating a more
intense flavour. Wine producers here are acutely aware that the Argentinian
has a very discerning palate when it comes to wine - the consumption per
capita/ year is 31.6 litres with Argentina being the 6th largest consumer
of wine worldwide. In recent years the home consumption of 'simple'
wines has burgeoned into a desire for something classier and so the competition
is intense, especially with the influx of foreign winery owners looking
to make a quick buck; so, the Rocas have aimed for a niche market ….not
bulk production, but smaller amounts of very distinctive and superior wine.
‘Great wines are born in the vineyard’, is the philosophy of Alfredo Roca,
so, the planting, growing, nurturing and harvesting of the grapes are the
most vital building blocks in the creation of a high class wine. - Roca

Idols In Argentina - A Humorous Look At Wine Culture Pretensions By Matt
Chesterton - Madge's website asks; 'Have you ever wanted to share a bottle
of wine with Madonna?' A dangerous question; in
the hierachy of fun things to do of an evening this proposition ranks alongside
'panty raid in a maternity ward'. And when you throw in the possibility
that Guy Ritchie might be joining us for a glass, most likely to discuss
his next 'project', it plummets still further, perhaps even to the level
of 'sharing a bottle of wine with Cliff Richard.' But let's
give the material girl the benefit of the doubt. Having made the transition
from sunny '80s popstar to oversexed '90s transgressor-in-chief to noughties
gay disco diva, and adopting a stricken African urchin, no one could accuse
Madonna of jumping on any bandwagons. 'Delicious and flavourful' according
to the website, Madgeplonk is available in Cabernet Sauvignon (spelt 'Cabarnet'
on the website, which is hardly going to endear the label to Robert Parker),
Pinot Grigio and Barbera versions. We can't tell you what they taste like
because no one seems to have reviewed them. But if you thought Shanghai
Surprise was a criminally underrated movie you'll probably enjoy a drop
of 'Cabarnet'. Wine

You Can Have Your Vineyard and Drink it Too.
Coming from California, Tom and I had fantasized of owning a vineyard in
Napa Valley in our younger years, but as we all know, life has a way of
dimming dreams, and time has a way of stealing the details, so our dreams
of owning a vineyard faded with the passing years, that is, until we landed
in Mendoza, the capital of the Mendoza Province. And oh what a first impression,
as far as the eyes could see, vineyards stretched into the distant horizons.
We both felt we had died and gone to heaven. Mendoza Province, the heart
of Argentina’s wine country, has over a 1,000 vineyards and wineries that
produce 70% of all Argentinean wines and 40% of all South American wines,
so we knew we had our homework cut out for us. We hit the ground running,
and with unbridled excitement ventured to the nearest real estate office
announcing to a not-so-understanding real estate agent that we had to have
one; we had to own our very own vineyard. The search for our special “terrior”
began. Off we hustled, scurrying over the beautiful countryside inspecting
vineyard after vineyard. Quickly, we came to the conclusion that vineyards
are like snowflakes and that no two are alike, i.e. location, price, size,
grape type, producing, non-producing, all were integral components of the
vineyard puzzle. - Now

A
Vineyard In An Argentina - An Unrivalled Opportunity to Buy a Piece of
Paradise. The Lodge has been designed by
the renowned environmental architect Orlando Armijo Migliassi: his vision
is the creation of an exceptionally inviting hotel and dining space for
guests looking to enjoy the peace, seclusion and beauty of the vineyards’
setting. As an investor looking for diverse yet sustainable opportunity
for the long-term, you have the opportunity to purchase parcels of land
within the Gavilan vineyards for real estate development. The property
you then build can be rented out to the increasing tourism interest in
the Mendoza region of Argentina, and your guests will be able to benefit
from the Gavilan Wine Lodge and its world-class facilities and amenities.
Orlando Armijo Migliassi has also designed sample villa models that you
may choose from, and each sympathetically blends in with the architecture
of the Lodge and the natural environment surrounding the entire estate.
There is even an attractive finance package available to would-be investors
to allow you to buy in with less money committed upfront.- A

Argentina:
Fractional Vineyards Make Wine and Cents. 10 Acre Malbec Vineyard with
2 bedroom 2 bath Casita Fractional Ownerships USD $12,000 Per Unit
- How many of us have dreamed of owning a vineyard, leisurely walking among
our very own vines, picking grapes at harvest time and watching them magically
turned into a delicate and delicious wine? Pondering the possibility of
owning a vineyard is a dream universally shared by millions of people around
the globe and has been for thousands of years. But as we well know reality
often smothers the flames of fantasy and the price for that “dream” can
soar beyond the reach of our pocketbook and outside of our comfort area
of what we consider “prudent investments” for our hard earned dollars.
Fractional Ownerships have become very popular and understandably a viable
alternative. Knowing that one will not be using a home/condo 52 weeks a
year but still being expected to pony up and pay 100% for the item and
100% of its annual expenses has motivated many investors not to abandon
their dreams, rather to take a serious look at another approach of capturing
that dream, “Fractional Ownership”. - Fractional

Becoming
a Vineyard Owner… Taking It From A Dream To Reality.
The first adrenalin rush was when we said, “Yes, we’ll buy it!” It was
love at first sight as we stood on the vacant fertile land of our future
108 acre vineyard. Being city folks, I cannot tell you what a thrill
it was to look as far as one can see, over a mile down the road, at a big
chunk of land and know it was all ours. Well, almost all ours, we
had to make it legal, so off we went to the Escribano’s Office to complete
the purchasing process. Now we are land owners but, STOP! That’s
not what we wanted to be, our dream is the lifestyle of a vineyard owner.
So, now, we must begin the transformation of our “terroir” into grapes.
Our lifelong dream was finally becoming a reachable reality and we hit
the ground running, what we needed now was to assemble professionals who
would help us breathe life into our adventure.- Becoming

Gavilan
Vineyards in San Rafael, Mendoza (* * * * *).
The estate is in the process of planting and grafting canes from the immediate
area on a large portion of the available land, which features the excellent
soils the area is well known for. Irrigation is accomplished by means of
the region’s extensive system of canals, which are fed by the runoff of
Andean snowfields and glaciers. Plans that are in the works include a switch
over from flooding type irrigation to drip irrigation, to conserve valuable
natural resources, as well as creating a large reservoir, to assure a more
consistent year round water supply. Several workers were busy caring for
the vines, and Martin was very proud of his crew, headed up by one of the
most knowledgeable and experienced agronomists in the entire region. This
area is blessed with an average 320 days of sunshine each year, contributing
to the region’s well-established viticulture that produces the fine Malbec
and Bonarda wines. It is worth mentioning here that Gavilan took a Silver
Medal for its ultra-premium 2009 Estate Reserve Bonarda at the 2011 Argentina
Wine Awards, where a total of 740 fine wines competed for honors. Not bad
for anyone, particularly the new kid on the block! I have to admit, I am
a very skeptical endorser of investment schemes, as too many of them have
turned into investment scams, designed to fleece the far away investors,
or they are simply poorly thought out and executed. I am pleased however
to report that I have found an exception to my doubts, located right here,
on the outskirts of bustling San Rafael, in Mendoza Province, near where
Argentina’s fabled wine country meets the High Andes.- Gavilan

A Tale Of The Argentine Department Of Highways.
The motorways of Argentina were to play a rather strange episode in my
life all because I was afraid to fly on the local airlines. I had become
justifiably terrified each time I flew in and out of Argentina of flying
on the Argentine airline, Aerolineas Argentina. Discovering that
Copa Airlines flew in and out of Córdoba, Argentina, I decided to
drive hundreds of miles to Córdoba, thus avoiding taking my life
in my hands on Aerolineas Argentina. Of course, little did I consider that
I was risking my life and my sanity by driving on Argentine highways. -
